Therapy is a space to slow down and better understand yourself—your experiences, your relationships, the world around you, and the ways those experiences have shaped you.
My work is clinically grounded, but I don’t believe a diagnosis should define the person sitting across from me. When a diagnosis is helpful or necessary, we use it as part of understanding the whole picture—not as the foundation of who you are.
The goal is to help you understand where you are, make sense of what you’ve experienced, and move toward who you want to become.
I remember sitting in my Introduction to Human Services class like it was yesterday. Something about what I was learning just felt right-I had found something I didn’t even know I was looking for.
As I continued learning and growing, I came to understand that helping others also meant continuing to become a better version of myself. That growth shaped how I connect with people, understand their experiences, and show up for this work.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside individuals through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Their stories have shaped me just as much as I hope my work has helped shape theirs.
That, to me, is the beauty of social work: we don’t simply change lives—we allow the people we meet to change us, too.
Over the past 15 years, my work has taken me through medical settings, community mental health, child protective services, crisis care, and work with individuals living with disabilities. Each experience has given me a different perspective on what people carry into the therapy room—and how mental health can affect far more than the individual.
Those experiences have shaped how I understand mental health and my approach therapy.People don’t need to be reduced to a diagnosis or a difficult chapter in their lives.
They need to be understood.
My approach combines clinical knowledge with practical, compassionate support designed to help clients make meaningful changes in their everyday lives.
Whether you’re navigating your own mental health journey or trying to understand how someone else’s mental health is affecting your relationship, you deserve a space where your experience can be heard.
That’s the kind of work I’m committed to doing at Smith Care Counseling.
